In our times of globalization and standartization, concern for the preservation of national identity arises even in big countries. The source for many of customs and calendar festivals being mythology, folklore and ancient songs, even the mystery of pagan times rituals, which has still a strong hold on for the present generation in Lithuania. The spiritual and cultural capital accumulated over centuries is found in inventive and lively festivals.

We recommend you the most important, picturesque and entertaining festivals as follows:

KAZIUKAS FAIR

Dedicated to the Day of Lithuania’s Patron St. Casimir (4 March), it turned one of the most cheerful festivities. Even if you do not buy a colourful Vilnius verba (Easter Palm), made of natural dried flowers, the music and lively atmosphere will involve you to join the jolly crowd in the street.

PALM SUNDAY

 Traditionally, on this day verbos, symbolizing palm branches, are consecrated. Verbos from the Vilnius' region are considered most beautiful in Lithuania. They are made of many types of dried and dyed plants. Each verba as well as every plant that verba is made of has its own symbolic meaning and function.

EASTER

Games with Easter eggs, singing and dancing, that's what Easter fun outdoors is about in the city's squares and courtyards.

STREET MUSIC DAY

At the beginning of May hundreds of musicians armed with various musical instruments goes out to into the streets, squares and courtyards of Vilnius. This is how Street Musician Day is celebrated, a festival that unify all those who speak a global universal  language, the language of music.

INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL SKAMBA SKAMBA KANKLIAI

Since 1973 every year on the last week of May in Vilnius - International folklore festival Skamba skamba kankliai. The annual folk festival proves the existance of a great variety of nations in the world, a good opportunity to get acquainted with the spirit of your own and the guest nation, to make friends with participants from other countries. RASOS (Midsummer Holiday on St. John day, 23-24 June)

Traditionally celebrated in Lithuania and all over the Baltics on the Day of St. John, 24th June. Kernave, boasting five mounds and beautiful scenery, is an ideal place for this mass event. On the peaks of mounds bonfires are lit on the shortest night of the year, wreaths are drifted downstream, songs are sung, and a good time is had by all. In search of the redeeming fern, young people dream of happiness, jump over the fire, play games, just like hundreds of years ago. Disco goes on up till sunrise.

MINDAUGAS CORONATION DAY, STATE HOLIDAY (6 July)

The holiday is dedicated to King Mindaugas, the founder of the state, Grand Lithuanian Dukedom, in the 13th century. It is worthwhile to go to Kernave, known as the ancient capital of this time. On this occasion the special Days of Living Archeology are held in Kernave, when ancient trades and entertainment come to life. It is a cheerful journey into the past, when one has the chance to learn the potter’s craft, to strike a coin, to shoot an arrow, ride a horse, and taste mead and ancient food…

CAPITAL DAYS. VILNIUS (End of August - September)

During this international festivity the concerts, street performances, fireworks, exhibitions are held in the Old Town. Not to be missed is a Franciscan Fair at the Town Hall square, where a special attention is devoted to fun-filled activities for children and adults. Step back in time watching the firefighters’, blaksmith’s equipment, used long ago and now again coming to life just before your very eyes…
