Aukstaitijos National Park (75 km)

Aukstaitijos National Park (75 km)

Aukstaitijos National Park, one of five national parks of Lithuania (40570 ha), situated in the north eastern part of the country, is beguiling in its natural purity. It offers a forest landscape typical of Lithuania. Forests, mostly coniferous, make up 69% of the park territory. Here, approximately 200 lakes are interconnected by many streams and stretch outward. The lake largest in area is Druksciai (45 sq.km) and the deepest is lake Tauragnai (60 m).

Back

Climb the Ledakalnis (Ice Hill) and you will get a superb panoramic view including six lakes. A labyrinth of connected lakes is an ideal place for canoeing or boat trip. This has made Paluse into a tourist Mecca. Cultural heritage of the park contains 106 monuments of archeology and architecture. Among them there are famous Ginuciai mound and wooden Paluse Church and belfry. Numerous ethnographic villages with old homesteads and water mills are also worthwhile of visiting. If you drop by the Bee-keeping Museum, you might want to have a tea with fresh honey, seemingly from ancient hollow beehives.
