Kernave (35 km)

Kernave (35 km)

Kernave is one of the earliest state-forming centres in Lithuania and the pre-Christian state capital. Archeological findings excavated here date as far back as the 4-13th century, thus gaining Kernave the name of Lithuanian Pompeii. The State Kernave Archeology and History Museum-Reserve contains 48 archeological and historical monuments.

Back

Long ago Kernave provided the strongest defense complex and in middle ages had to withstand the invasions of the powerful Teutonic and Livonian Orders as well as Mongol-Tartars. Within the museum-reserve area, which covers 199 ha, of special interest for tourists there are five mounds. One of them is called the Throne of Mindaugas.
The 6th of July, the coronation day of Grand Lithuanian Duke Mindaugas, the only Lithuanian king (1253) is now commemorated as state holiday. On this occasion in Kernave the special Days of Living Archeology are held annually when ancient trades and entertainment come to life. Picturesque valley and mounds of Kernave is an ideal place for summer feasts, such as St. John day in June to be arranged.
