Klaipeda (310 km)

Klaipeda (310 km)

The ice-free seaport. Owing to its strategic importance it was seized by the Livonian Order in 1252 and became a place of endless battles. The Order built a castle there and named the city Memelburg. The Klaipeda region and the lands extending to the southwest of it (currently the Kaliningrad region of Russia) was referred to as Lithuania Minor or Prussian Lithuania. It was there, that the first Lithuanian books “Catechismus”(1547) and “Seasons of the year” (“Metai”,1760) were printed. In the 19th century for a short time Klaipeda (Memelburg) had become the capital of Prussia.

Back

The beautiful edifice, former royal residence of the Prussian king in 1807, survived on the bank of the river Dane. German influence is evident in the regular streets of the old town and the timber and stone architecture. This land was also an inspiration to German writers. Among them there were Simon Dach, who lived in the 17th c. and praised in verse his beloved Ann from Tharau (now her monument adorns the Theatre Square); Hermann Sudermann and Thomas Mann. On the other side of Curonian Lagoon there remains the 19th century Kopgalis Fortesss with Maritime Museum and indoor aquarium, which boasts dolphin and walrus show.
