Then concern arose to plant protection, and the dunes were “dressed” with a forest of low mountain pines. The Juodkrante forest is lush and the Hill of Witches, rising on the top of dunes, is charming. The tallest dunes in Europe are to be found in Nida, the so called Lithuanian Sahara. It is an experience to climb the 60 m height white sand Parnidis Dune. Nida was a favourite holiday place of writer Thomas Mann, and his house on the hill serves the venue for literature society gatherings and public events. Nowhere else, but in Lithuania Manor, namely in Nida, in the old cemetery, will one encounter the wooden crosses, named krikstai, as pre-Christian era monuments. Amber Gallery in Nida is another opportunity to obtain excellent souvenirs.
