Latvia‘s capital city of Riga is the largest and the most cosmopolitan town in the Baltics. Long ago, Riga was a renowned centre of the military Livonian Order, established by German crusaders in 1202, and Riga harbour flourished as one of the key members of the Hanseatic League.
Estonia and its capital city of Tallin have been under the rule of Danes, Germans (Livonian order), Swedes and most recently the Russians. Nowadays Estonia is often presented as the most advanced of the three Baltic states; it has adopted euro in 2011. Old Tallinn boasts an architectural diversity of styles from the 13th century through to today.
