Searching roots

We assist those, who having originated from Lithuania, in search of their roots are eager to visit native places and vicinities where their parents or grandparents were born or spent their lives.

Lithuania was once motherland for many Jews and boasted the largest jewish diaspora in Europe up till the II WW. Thanks to the famous philosopher, rabbi and reformer of the Talmud, Elijah ben Solomon, the Gaon of Vilnius (1720-1797), Vilnius city became the most prominent Jewish religious and cultural centre.

Here, in the „city of hundred synagogues“ lived the originator of Yiddish literature in Lithuania, the classic Shalom Aleichem (1859-1916), the grandfather of the famous modern American writer Bell Kaufman. An annual international Yiddish Summer Lnguage course and seminar on culture is organised in Vilnius, and is attended by some seventy participants from around the world. The Vilnius Yiddish Institute is the first Yiddish centre of higher learning established in Eastern Europe.

We offer to know more about Jewish Vilnius during sightseeing Northern Jerusalem and to pay homage to the to victims of Holocaust in Paneriai, Kaunas or other places around the country. Now there is only a sparse Jewish community, a Jewish gymnasium, a synagogue and several museums (Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum) in Vilnius.
